Big Freedia and Tank and The Bangas will headline the sixth annual Women Performing for Women benefit concert at Cafe Istanbul in New Orleans on Thursday, September 29. The show is a fundraiser for Hagar’s House, a Mid-City sanctuary and home for women, children and those who identify as transgender.
“I can’t wait to perform with Tank and The Bangas to raise money and awareness of Hagar’s House,” Big Freedia said in a statement. “They are an amazing refuge for the women and children of New Orleans who are getting on their feet, and I hope people come have fun and support this cause!”
In addition to the music, the event will feature a silent auction, cash bar and a buffet from local restaurants. Child care is also included in the cost of the ticket, but spots must be reserved in advance.
Tickets for Women Performing for Women are now on sale for $40. All proceeds from the event will go to Hagar’s House, a community that has provided sanctuary for 110 women and 77 children since its establishment in 2007. As a program of the nonprofit First Grace Community Alliance, the home runs on a shoestring budgets with two full-time employees, two part-time employees and one part-time, live-in volunteer staff/service member.
“Hagar’s House is more than a house,” explains Carolyn Mayes, Hagar’s House director Carolyn Mayes. “We’re not a traditional shelter in many respects. For instance, we don’t have an automatic limit on how long a resident can stay. Instead, each resident and family creates a personalized plan for moving toward permanent housing. The goal is for everyone to leave with a support group and savings, employment, or continued education.”
