What better way to help revitalize Central City and support its small businesses than to gather as many people as possible for some synchronized booty bouncing?
That’s right – Big Freedia will be headlining the Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard Merchants & Business Association’s (OCHBMBA’s) 8th annual Central City Festival on Saturday, November 15.
During her concert set, the assembled crowd will attempt to break the Guinness World Record she set last year in New York City for the “Most People Twerking Simultaneously,” and you can be part of that number!
The OCHBMBA is dedicated to bringing Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard, a designated Louisiana Main Street and Cultural Products district, back to life.
This has become especially pertinent in the wake of Katrina, and the organization works hard to foster the growth of culture, commerce, and multinationalism on the Boulevard.
They’ve enjoyed several successes, notably the opening of the Southern Food and Beverage Museum and the New Orleans Jazz Marketplace. Big Freedia’s spectacle is sure to contribute to the effort.
In addition to thumping beats from the “Queen of Bounce,” festival goers will also be able to enjoy diverse and multinational performances by electric soul-rock band Honorable South, the First Emanuel Baptist Church Choir, rapper Lucky Lou, the Sistahs Making a Change dance troupe, the Brazilian Casa Samba dance troupe, the Free Agents Brass Band accompanied by the Young Men Olympian Social Aid and Pleasure Club, and the Consulate of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in New Orleans.
This year’s festival will also feature cooking demonstrations by chefs of local restaurants, and, as usual, food trucks, art vendors, and kids’ activities.
It runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard.
