Big Freedia continues to expand her sonic universe with the release of “Sunday Best,” a vibrant, soul-laced track that blends the energy of her signature style with the uplift of gospel. Teaming up with Tamar Braxton, the track is a nod to self-love, gratitude and the tradition of dressing up for the week’s holiest day.
“Sunday Best” arrives alongside Freedia’s recent single “Take My Hand,” both of which hint at a full gospel project expected later this year. Together, the two tracks reflect a return to the artist’s church roots, where she once served as a choir director and regularly performed with New Orleans gospel ensembles. A standout performance at SXSW earlier this year with a full live choir offered a first taste of what’s to come and was widely praised for its energy and emotional depth.
The drop follows a wave of momentum for the cultural icon, who has recently headlined high-profile collaborations with artists like Beyoncé, Lizzo and Kesha. Big Freedia also remains a fixture across media and entrepreneurship, with two reality TV series under her belt, a memoir, a cannabis brand, and plans to open her own hotel in New Orleans by 2026.
Live performances of the new material kick off at home in New Orleans this spring, with appearances at the Jazz & Heritage Festival, Bayou Boogaloo and the Dew Drop Inn, before Big Freedia heads to the UK and Canada for summer festival dates.
