Big Freedia announced plans to open a boutique hotel and music venue called “Hotel Freedia” at 2114 Decatur Street and Frenchmen Street. It will include a restaurant featuring some of Freedia’s personal recipes as well as a pool and music club.
The two-story, 4,800-square-foot building has space for the restaurant/music venue on the bottom floor, five rooms on the second floor and space for the pool/club outdoors adjacent to the building.
Freedia plans to make the space her “home base” for New Orleans performances and bring in local and national talent to the new venue. A grand opening date has not yet been officially announced.
With Midcitizien Entertainment and several local investors, Big Freedia and property owner Zach Kupperman were able to finance and plan the new space. Bradley Bowers will be designing the space according to Freedia’s concepts and Modus Inc., responsible for buildings like Harrah’s New Orleans Casino and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, will be the architect of record.
New Orleans’ bounce queen, Big Freedia has served as an unofficial ambassador for the New Orleans music scene bringing the culture to other major cities worldwide. One of her recent achievements was featured on the new Beyoncé single, “Break My Soul,” where Beyoncé sampled Big Freedia and Adam Pigott’s 2014 bounce song “Explode,” which is up for Song of the Year and Best Dance/Electronic Recording at the Grammys. She will also headline the Jazz and Heritage Festival later this year.
