Big Chief Donald Harrison, Jr. will headline a night at the Orpheum Theater on Wednesday, April 26. The show, which takes place between the first and second weekends of Jazz Fest, will see the Big Chief backed by his current band–guitarist Detroit Brooks, drummer Joe Dyson, bassist Max Moran and pianist Zaccai Curtis.
The performance will also feature an appearance from the Tipitina’s interns, a group comprised of high school students that participate in Tipitina’s free after-school jazz program.
Harrison’s set at the Orpheum will come one day after Tipitina’s 15th annual Intruments A Comin’ event. Slated for April Monday, April 25, that show will see Harrison honored with a spot on the Tipitina’s Foundation’s Wall of Fame. Harrison–the Bg Chief of the Congo Square Nation Afro-New Orleans Cultural Group–will be recognized for “his ongoing commitment to mentoring the next generation of musicians and his continued dedication to developing the Tipitina’s Internship Program.”
Tickets for Harrison’s Orpheum Theater concert will go on sale this Friday, January 15 at 10am CST.
In related news, the newly-renovated Orpheum Theater will kick off the first Jazz Fest season since its return with a very special reunion show from The Original Meters.
