In 2009, Latin percussionist Humberto “Pupi” Menes’ life changed for the tragic. After 35 memorable years of playing in the New Orleans Latin scene with bands like Fredy Omar con su Banda, Otra, and others, Menes had a stroke, leaving him unable to perform.
Born in the Cuban city of Matanzas, Menes’ career as a percussionist took off in the 1960s in Miami. Before settling in New Orleans, he played drums for the rock band Ocean, and later with Cuban pianist and onetime New Orleans resident Ruben Gonzalez.
This Sunday, March 25, the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation is hosting a benefit for Menes. “Margaritas and Mustaches” will take place at Felipe’s Taqueria Uptown from noon to 6 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go toward Menes’ health fund. Local Latin all-star band Mas Mamones will perform from 2:30 – 5:30 p.m., and there will be a contest for the best mustaches in the crowd. If you are without a mustaches, fake options will be passed around, along with $4 margaritas. There will also be booths showcasing artwork by local Latin American Artists.
Menes’ distinct style mixes tumbadora, chekere and bongo, building on his reputation as one of New Orleans’ greatest living congueros (Conga players). His presence and passion for music still thrives, and the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation urges music lovers in the city to show their support for one of the community’s great musicians.
