The stage play Angola 3 will premiere on Friday, October 20, at the Carver Theater. This play was written by Parnell Herbert and will be directed by filmmaker Saran Bynum. The doors will open each night at 7 p.m., and the performances will start at 7:30 p.m.
Angola 3 portrays the story of Robert King, Albert Woodfox, and Herman Wallace, three former inmates of Louisiana State Penitentiary. These men were held in solitary confinement for extended periods, attracting international attention due to concerns about the fairness and humanity of their treatment. Robert King spent 29 years in solitary confinement after being wrongly convicted of a prison murder in 1973, while Albert Woodfox and Herman Wallace served 43 years and ten months in solitary after their unjust convictions in the 1974 killing of a prison corrections officer, marking the longest known period of solitary confinement in American prison history.
The cast of Angola 3 includes Larry DE McGhee as Robert King, Jay Dorsey as Albert Woodfox, and Justin Williams-Davis as Herman Wallace.
The play is sponsored by VOTE: Voices of the Experienced, an organization focused on criminal justice reform. Special guests, including Robert King, the sole surviving member of the Angola 3, will be present on the opening night. The event will also feature performances by The Baby Dolls, Spyboy Rickie, Big Chief David of the Washitaw Nation and Al “Carnival Time” Johnson. Additionally, Dameon Neville will premiere his song, “I Want to Be Free,” dedicated to Herman Wallace.
Angola 3 aims to offer a thought-provoking and impactful experience, shedding light on a chapter of American history that deserves attention.
