On June 25, New Orleans singer-songwriter Andrew Duhon is returning to the city for an intimate performance at Three Muses. He will play music from his new record, False River, whose songs were inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Self Reliance” essay and Delta blues.
False River, which was released on May 25, follows a different creative approach from Duhon’s 2013 Grammy-nominated effort The Moorings. Duhon’s “backing band” from the record and subsequent tour consisted of bassist Myles Weeks and drummer G. Maxwell Zemanovic, and the result was a brand new creative troupe.
In an interview with Billboard, Duhon describes the writing process of False River as the trio pushing him musically beyond the solo compositions he had written in the past, which allowed for the creation of more thoughtful music. For this record, Duhon says the music came first, so there was a learning curve in lyric-writing that did not exist on previous records where the lyrics came first. “These new songs came along not just as solo compositions the way I had written in the past, but I allowed what the trio was doing to start musically pushing and musically informing me to write more thoughtful music, basically. Before this record I would have told you the lyrics come first, but in playing with these guys the music came about first that put me in a space the lyrics had to fit into more rigidly. So some of this stuff was a learning curve in trying to write songs that way,” he explained.
Live performances for False River are mostly solo or duo shows, but rarely with Zemanovic as he’s currently on-tour drumming for Miranda Lambert. On this tour, Duhon says he wants to place particular emphasis on finding the balance between writing and performing.
In the last few years, Duhon has played at major music festivals like Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits and Voodoo among others. In addition to his show at Three Muses, Duhon will perform at Ogden After Hours on June 28. Tickets for that show are available here.
