Note: Due to Hurricane Zeta, André Bohren has had the performance described below postponed to 6 p.m. November 11.
Pianist André Bohren will be streaming from Snug Harbor on Wednesday, October 28 6-7 p.m. via Facebook Live. He will be playing all classical piano music, including works by Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Rachmaninov, and Balakirev.
The multi-instrumentalist is perhaps best-known for founding and holding down the drum seat for Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes (JSDN), one of the most eclectic funk-rock bands in New Orleans. Since the onset of COVID-19, Bohren has been livestreaming via Facebook with his band Desert Nudes, formed with pals David Pomerleau and John Paul Carmody. You may have also spotted him around town this summer performing Piano on a Truck, a project started by piano repairman Jacques Ferland that allowed The Maple Leaf Bar regular performers like Bohren to book shows in a socially distanced vehicle…trucking a piano in the bed.
“Snug Harbor has one of the nicest pianos in town, and I hated the thought of this instrument sitting there unplayed, so I was thrilled when they said yes to hosting my live-stream on October 28,” says Bohren. “In the past months I have done live-streams in front of Tipitina’s and the Maple Leaf, splitting the proceeds with the venues. I believe that collaborations are the best way to get through to the other side of the pandemic, seeing as how without these venues, musicians won’t have a place to play. It’s all about helping one another out during difficult times, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to once again play on the beautiful piano on the legendary Snug Harbor stage.”
At only 16 Andre played Gershwin’s “Rhapsody In Blue” as the featured soloist with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, and received many awards at various piano competitions before he was 18. He would go on to spend over a decade of touring and finish his music degree in 2015 at UNO. Bohren has performed and recorded a diverse roster of New Orleans artists, including JSDN, Rory Danger & The Danger Dangers, Spencer Bohren, Dave Jordan, Chris Mule, and more, in addition to many solo piano engagements.
The beloved Snug Harbor venue and restaurant is also getting back to normal one step at a time. They are currently open for takeout Fridays through Sundays, between 4-8 p.m.
