American Routes, the locally- and nationally-distributed radio show hosted by creator and Tulane professor of anthropology Nick Spitzer, will be recorded live on Thursday, October 27 with a studio audience.
American Routes is typically pre-recorded and broadcast without an audience, but the show is beginning a series of live recordings in New Orleans. This week, the show will have a live audience and will be hosted at Artisound Production Studio at 3116 St. Claude Avenue from 7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Guests performers are the Stooges Brass Band, who recently competed in the Red Bull Street Kings competition.
American Routes is blues and jazz, gospel and soul, rockabilly and country, Cajun and swamp pop, Tejano, Latin and beyond that was the brainchild of Spitzer, and is now celebraitng 25 years. Songs and stories from musicians describe a deep and diverse nation with sounds and styles shared by all Americans. American Routes is broadcast locally on WWNO-FM.
Spitzer said “We are celebrating 25 years on air nationwide. Just by hanging in through thick and thin we have more stations each week than ever … over 380 stations. As public media presenting culture/music each week we are the only program between Austin and Washington, DC. Can’t believe it’s gone on this long. I thought maybe five years or so. But with a public radio network so awash in news/talk, we are survivors in a nation in need of cultural inclusion beyond all the bad news. God bless New Orleans!”
There will also be more live recordings at venues around town, including the Ellis Marsalis Center. The event at Artisound only had 20 seats left at press time and those tickets are available here. Stay tuned to American Routes for more live recording info.
