Amazon is about to close a deal for the United States distribution rights to Gleason, a documentary about former New Orleans Saints defensive back Steve Gleason. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this week to much acclaim.
Gleason became a local hero in 2006 when he blocked a punt by Michael Koenen of the Atlanta Falcons during the Saints’ first post-Hurricane Katrina game at the newly reopened Superdome. The inspirational play marked an early high point in what ended up being the team’s best season up to that time (the event is now memorialized with a statue in front of the Superdome).
In 2011, Gleason was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Despite the degenerative nature of the disease, Gleason refused to let the diagnosis slow him down. He went on to found Team Gleason, which is now one of the world’s foremost organizations working assist people with ALS and raise public awareness about the disease.
Deadline reports that Gleason–directed by Clay Tweel–follows the former NFL player as he continues to live life to the fullest despite his deteriorating physical condition. The film, which was shot over four years, focuses on his relationship with his wife, Michel, and his son, Rivers, as well as his myriad accomplishments in the face adversity.
There is currently no word on when Gleason will be released by Amazon.
