Louisiana fiddler and vocalist Amanda Shaw will celebrate the release of a new album with a livestream performance from the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans.
Joie, which arrives Friday, July 24, is Shaw’s debut recording of full-fledged traditional Cajun music, although with the modern take that has become a signature of Shaw’s past work. Comprised of classic songs showcasing the cultural heritage of Cajun Louisiana, the album is described as “high energy” and “soul stirring” with inspiration taken from the works of Dennis Macgee and Michael Doucet.
“Joie is a modern interpretation of Cajun creativity paying homage to the noble pioneers, while ushering in a fresh perspective of the authentic sounds born on the bayou,” says a representative for Shaw. Shaw, who in 2018 released Please, Call Me Miss Shaw, isn’t a newcomer to music nor to navigating a world in which music is consumed primarily online. In 2017, she opted to roll out an album one track at a time, saying “I joke sometimes that putting out music is like the wild wild west—once it goes out on the internet it’s got a life of its own. And I was super-proud of these songs and wanted to give them a chance to live. So I’m not releasing the full album at once because I didn’t want to waste it.”
This weekend, Amanda Shaw and the Royal Sonesta will present a “safecation” during a Saturday Night Facebook Live Watch Party, where she will perform a song from Joie. Shaw will be taking over the Facebook and Instagram accounts of the Royal Sonesta, where she will take fans along for the ride as she prepares for the unveiling of her new record.
