As one of the true legends of American music, Allen Toussaint goes sorely under appreciated outside of New Orleans, but a PBS special airing this weekend aims to change that.
The documentary brings to life the “A Tribute to Toussaint” show at Harrah’s New Orleans Theatre that occurred on April 30, 2014.
In typical Toussaint style, the tribute show operated on several levels simultaneously.
It served as a fundraiser for New Orleans Artists Against Hunger and Homelessness, the charity Toussaint co-founded in 1985, as well as a 75th birthday celebration for the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame singer, songwriter, pianist, composer, producer, and promoter.
With appearances by a host of musicians Toussaint has worked with, including Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, Jimmy Buffett, Trombone Shorty, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, Joe Stampley, Art and Cyril Neville, Jon Cleary, Deacon John and Joe Henry, the show was a night to remember.
The PBS special will air on WLAE on Saturday, December 6, at 7 p.m.
