At 7 p.m. on June 2, Bryan Hymel’s Opus Opera Project is bringing a brand new opera experience to Civic Theatre. For Opus Opera’s season finale, the performance will feature a particular medley of operatic and physical acrobatics called Mystique.
According to its website, Opus Opera was created by Hymel to distance audiences from the stuffiness that he believes plagues much of the classical art world. To accomplish this, Opus Opera pairs vocal music with other creative art forms to create intimate performances in non-conventional venues for opera music.
For the vocal portion of this event, Opus Opera has enlisted Hymel himself, as well as singers Irini Kyriakidou Hymel, Christina Vial, Weston Hurt and Rainelle Krause.
Liza Rose, “The Grande Dame of New Orleans Circus,” is leading the acrobatic portion of the event. Her team of aerialists, the Fly Circus Company, will feature performances from a variety of acrobats, jugglers and clowns.
Although Rose is known as a local sensation, her career has extended far outside of the city. She was the featured soloist in Mezzo Lunatico for Teatro ZinZanni in Seattle and a finalist in the U.S. Aerial Championships in 2016. She also has experience choreographing for America’s premiere contemporary circus company, the Acrobatic Conundrum, and performing alongside Jessica Lange on American Horror Story: Freak Show.
Rose is also the founder of New Orleans’ only professional circus training facility, the Fly Circus Space, and its Fly Movement Salon, which occurs every first Tuesday of the month at Cafe Istanbul. On a much larger scale, she helps to grow the acrobatics community on a national scale through her involvement with the American Youth Circus Organization, the American Circus Educators, the national American circus advocacy group Circus Now.
Tickets cost between $20 and $75, and the event features a VIP experience as well. Here, VIPs have the opportunity to attend the show’s after party where a meet & greet with the performers will occur.
