Following last year’s acclaimed presentations of Gershwin’s “Blue Note” and local Dan Shore’s “An Embarrassing Position,” the 9th Ward Opera Company comes back to life this summer with nightly shows from Thursday, July 24, to Sunday, July 27, at the Marigny Opera House, 725 St. Ferdinand Street. Doors will open at 7:30p.m. and performances start at 8:00p.m.
Now in its third year of existence, the homegrown opera company will present two extraordinary one-act operas, Neil Weisensel and Michael Cavanagh’s “Gisela in Her Bathtub” (1991) and Samuel Barber’s “A Hand of Bridge” (1959).
While “Gisela in Her Bathtub” will bring its load of puns and gags, “A Hand of Bridge” will depict four unhappily married people revealing their innermost selves during one casual game of cards.
Founded in 2012 by University of New Orleans teacher Kathleen Westfall, the 9th Ward Opera Company will once again both enable young singers to perform in operatic productions and expose local audiences to classical music and opera in a fun way.
Tickets for the performances are $20 or $10 for students and seniors and can be purchased here. For further information, visit www.9thwardoperacompany.com.
