Louisiana native R&B singer Aniya Teno has teamed up with Los Angeles-born, New Orleans-based producer Deven Raval (a.k.a. 7) to form the R&B fusion duo 7Ten. The group will release their debut EP, Bloom, on Friday, May 19.
The 6-track EP is the first ever multi-track collaboration between the two artists. It draws on neo-soul, hip-hop and R&B influences to create a modern yet traditional style reminiscent of artists like Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. The project combines 7’s soulful production with live instrumentation from local New Orleans keyboardist Jordan Bush and drummer Mervin Redmond Jr., creating a sound similar to producers like Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin.
This production style, paired with Aniya’s lyricism and powerful storytelling, culminates in a thought-provoking story about the importance of self-love and growth as Aniya paints pictures of relationships, unresolved trauma, growth, and healing. The EP also includes “Impulsive,” the lead single from the duo, released in late March of this year.
As a duo, Aniya and Deven are eerily reminiscent of Anderson Paak and Knxwledge’s collaboration project NoWxrries, as Deven brings a classic California warmth to the project’s neo-soul-inspired production, which pairs well with Aniya’s incredibly smooth vocal tone and intimate subject matter. Although Aniya cites H.E.R. as one of their biggest influences, they bring their fresh and unique style to their songwriting and delivery.
With Bloom, 7Ten have created a project that captures the essence of modern R&B. The EP showcases the talents of two artists who have come together to create something fresh while paying homage to the definitive sounds of the past.
Bloom is set to release on all platforms on Friday, May 19.
