610 Stompers host auditions for new dance team members

Lace up your tennis shoes and find a pair of tight coach’s shorts: the all-male dance group 610 Stompers will be hosting the first round of their yearly tryouts on Saturday, August 20, at Southport Hall, 200 Monticello Avenue in New Orleans.

610 StompersThe group is encouraging all males age 21 or older to come demonstrate their moves in an open audition. Auditioners should line up beginning at 8:30 a.m. Only the first 75 men will be admitted. Contestants begin by learning a dance routine starting at 9 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., the main stage and bar will open and by 12 p.m. tryouts will begin in front of panel of judges of current Stompers and Splits (the groups’ infamous female safeguards). By the end of the day, judges will inform the contestants of their callback status. A final round of judging will take place the following Saturday on August 27.

The public is invited to watch auditions at noon. Tickets to watch the show cost $10 via Eventbrite in advance or at the door.

“Opening the event to the public really made the event what it is,” said Stomper Mont Creamer. Creamer said the tryouts “turned into an event in and of itself,” when the contestant turnout grew to reach close to 200 people.

In addition to the dance moves that are expected to fit the Stomper’s motto, “Ordinary men with Extraordinary moves,” the judges will be looking for fun personalities and overall stage presence from the contestants, according to Creamer.

The 610 Stompers started in 2009, in the midst of the Saints’ Superbowl run, and performed for the first time in the “Buddy D” parade and the “Lombardi Gras” Superbowl Parade,. They’ve performed in hundreds of events and charity fundraisers since then. For more information, visit 610stompers.com.
