Drake, the platinum-selling and multiple Grammy-winning rap superstar, recently topped the charts once again with “Nice For What,” a bona fide bounce track that has placed a spotlight on New Orleans hip-hop. Though some have voiced concern that the Toronto native repeatedly appropriates influence from various cultures, 5th Ward Weebie says this particular record is only going to benefit the city.
Along with Big Freedia and BlaqNMild, Weebie is a contributing artist on the record, for which a New Orleans remix will be released on Friday, April 20. Ahead of that release, he spoke exclusively with OffBeat.com about working with Drake, why “Nice For What” is helping to preserve bounce music and why it’s so important for local hip-hop talent to protect themselves from culture vultures. Plus, he shares details about forthcoming solo projects slated for release later this year.
