39 years ago today, on November 25, 1976, The Band said goodbye with a spectacular four hour performance at San Francisco’s famed Winterland Ballroom. The legendary concert–the original The Band lineup’s final show as a unit–became known as The Last Waltz and was later immortalized in a Martin Scorsese film of the same name.
Louisiana was well represented during the guest-filled extravaganza at Winterland that night, as Dr. John and Bobby Charles dropped by for renditions of “Such a Night” and “Down South in New Orleans” (unfortunately, Charles’ contribution was cut from Scorsese’s film). On top of that, the late Allen Toussaint wrote new horn arrangements that took many of The Band’s classic tunes to a new level.
Here’s a look back at a few great moments from one of the most memorable concerts in rock history:
Dr. John took the stage for this In The Right Place classic.
Scorsese made a rare mistake when he cut Abbeville, LA-born Bobby Charles’ contribution from the Last Waltz film.
Allen Toussaint was responsible for the fantastic horn arrangements on many of the concert’s tracks, including this one.
Most of the night’s guests returned to the stage to close out the show with this Bob Dylan-penned number.
