There’s a unique sweet spot certain types of music can evoke, a coveted spot which only a handful of talents are able to wedge themselves into. It is in this spot– lying somewhere between the familiarity of an old childhood memory revisited and the uninhibited freshness of getting to know a new person– where the music of Spencer Bohren comfortably sits: his records could coo a baby to sleep while simultaneously accompanying a glass of whiskey. Bohren knows the art of charming listeners. Both contemporary in attitude and deeply grounded in Americana tradition, his music evokes the drawl of a long Southern evening, gently transporting listeners to quiet evenings along rivers and bayous.
Spencer Bohren is a veteran of New Orleans folk-and-blues. The guitarist first arrived to the city in the late ’70s and has been drawing crowds around town ever since, establishing a solid following with his warm and inviting style. In 2012, he paired up with a group of young musicians, The Whippersnappers (including his son, drummer Andre Bohren). Together they formed Spencer Bohren and The Whippersnappers. In this ensemble, youthfulness meets time-tried Southern blues to create an act that manages to be both exciting and familiar, modern and traditional.
To soak up the sounds of the Bayou for yourself, you can buy tickets for their next show on February 1 at the intimate Snug Harbor. As of press time, the show remains unlisted on the Snug Harbor website, so please check back there frequently. Spencer Bohren and the Whippersnappers will play two shows that night, the first at 8 p.m. and the second at 10 p.m.
