Jazz in January returns for its fifth year at Christ Episcopal Church Covington on January 24-26. This three-day music festival is a celebration of the burgeoning Americana music scene in Louisiana, culminating with a tribute to musical legend Aretha Franklin. The festival honors the role music plays in bringing people together, particularly through jazz music: “Jazz in particular, with its roots in spirituals and gospel music, is a complement to worship that transcends culture and style.” says founder Rev. Bill Miller.
There will be feature performances on Friday, January 24 by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Shannon McNally and The New Orleans Catahoulas. Performances on Saturday, January 25 are by psychedelic soul band Kalu and the Electric Joint and rock-and-roll Americana band Birds of Chicago.
