Cardi B, the first solo female rapper to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 19 years with her single “Bodak Yellow,” will land her rocketing success in New Orleans for a night on Friday, December 29, 2017 at the Joy Theater as part of the The Swisher Sweets Artist Project’s NOLA Takeover.
The “Love and Hip Hop: New York” reality star-turned-rapper released her first mixtape, Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1, in March of 2016. She quickly released Vol. 2 in January, and “Bodack Yellow” in June, making it only slightly over a year from her debut as an artist to her debut as number-one charting artist. Now, this 25-year-old from the Bronx whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar can count herself among the ranks of Lauryn Hill, the last female rapper to reach the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, doing so in 1998.
Locally raised Mannie Fresh will open for Cardi B. Fresh appeared on the cover of OffBeat’s June issue alongside Flow Tribe to discuss the band’s latest album, which Fresh produced. He will be joined by Cleveland-born rapper Machine Gun Kelly, whose single, “Bad Things,” peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in Februrary.
Fans will vote on four additional Swisher Sweet artists who have previously performed at “Pack Nights” to join the opening lineup. Pack Nights are performances hosted by the project around the country in cities like Houston, Los Angeles, Detroit and Atlanta that feature emerging artists Swisher Sweets has selected to promote. The project gives over $25,000 in grants over the course of the year in support of these up and coming musicians.
For the show, you must be 21 to enter. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and the performance will begin at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased here.
