The spirit of jazz will come alive once again in the heart of New Orleans as the 24th Annual Satchmo SummerFest returns on August 3 and 4. Presented by the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund (NOTCF), this beloved festival honors the enduring legacy of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, the city’s legendary native son. Hosted at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint, the event is a two-day celebration featuring over two dozen musical performances, delectable cuisine, and a host of special activities—all offered free to the public.
“We are thrilled to bring the 2024 Satchmo SummerFest to life with an incredible lineup of uniquely New Orleans experiences,” said Emily Madero, President & CEO of French Quarter Festivals, Inc. “This festival is a true celebration of Louis Armstrong’s legacy and the vibrant culture of New Orleans. As we celebrate this year on Satchmo’s birthday, we’re energized to produce an event that would make Armstrong proud, featuring world-class talent, delicious food, opportunities to discover and explore history, and the pure joy of our community coming together to celebrate.”
A Melodic Celebration
The festival showcases a dynamic lineup of 30 musical acts, highlighting the diverse sounds that define New Orleans. From traditional jazz and swing to funk and R&B, the performances span two stages: the Fidelity Bank Stage and the newly introduced PosiGen Solar Stage. The event kicks off with the Satchmo Sound-Off, featuring the youthful talents of The Roots of Music, setting the tone for a weekend filled with rhythm and soul.
Highlight performances include local favorites like The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Catherine Russell, and John Boutté. The festival will also feature debut sets from Brass-A-Holics with Flagboy Giz, NOJO 7 featuring Phillip Manuel, Detroit Brooks with a special appearance by Charmaine Neville, and Big Chief Donald Harrison with the ICONS, featuring Choppa, BlaqNmilD, and Tonya Boyd-Cannon.
Culinary Delights and New Partnerships
In addition to the musical feast, the festival offers a culinary journey with seven food vendors serving a variety of local flavors. From the Caribbean cuisine of 14 Parishes to the soul food of Cafe Dauphine, attendees can savor a taste of New Orleans. This year, new vendors like Mrs. Wheat’s Pies and Nori Guys bring exciting options such as Cajun meat and seafood pies and fusion dishes like crab and shrimp wonton nachos.
The 2024 festival also marks a new partnership with PosiGen Solar and Energy Efficiency, underlining a commitment to sustainability.
Exploring Armstrong’s Legacy
Beyond the music and food, Satchmo SummerFest offers educational opportunities to delve into Armstrong’s profound impact. The Satchmo Legacy Stage in Memory of Joni Berry will feature presentations by noted Satchmo scholars and historians, providing insights into Armstrong’s life and influence. A new exhibition, It All Started in Jane Alley: Louis Armstrong in New Orleans, will debut, exploring Armstrong’s formative years in the city and his lasting connection to his hometown.
For those needing a sensory break, Benny’s Sensory Activation Vehicle, courtesy of the Beignet Fest Foundation, will provide a calm space for individuals with sensory sensitivities.
Sunday’s Spirit and Eco-Friendly Initiatives
The festivities continue on Sunday with the traditional Jazz Mass at St. Augustine Church, followed by the lively Satchmo Salute Parade. The parade will feature local groups such as the Treme Million Dollar Baby Dolls, the Zulu Steppers, and the Sporty Brass Band.
In keeping with the city’s commitment to sustainability, the festival’s Geauxing Green initiative returns for its fourth year, promoting responsible waste management. Last year, the program successfully diverted 56% of waste from landfills. The festival will also introduce a new line of recycled festival banner bags, designed by local company Tchoup Industries, adding a unique and eco-friendly touch to the event.
Celebrating Satchmo’s Legacy
Satchmo SummerFest is held annually in honor of Louis Armstrong’s birthday, celebrating the life and achievements of the man known worldwide as “Satchmo.” Armstrong’s influence extends far beyond his contributions to jazz, representing a unique American cultural legacy. The festival continues to celebrate his life, bringing together the New Orleans community and visitors from around the world to honor a true musical pioneer.
