Pal Productions has announced Van Morrison, Retired Lieutenant Colonel David Couvillon and C.C. Adcock as the recipients of the 2014 Slim Harpo Music Awards.
Named after blues musician James Moore, more popularly known as Slim Harpo, the Slim Harpo Music Awards are awarded each year to musicians and enthusiasts who support the music and culture of Louisiana.
Van Morrison was named as the 2014 Slim Harpo Music Legend for his historical music credits and his vocal performance on Them’s rendition of “Don’t Start Crying Now,” a Slim Harpo original.
Released 50 years ago, this recording marked the beginning of an illustrious musical career for Morrison, including inductions into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as six Grammy awards.
Retired United States Marine Lieutenant Colonel David Couvillon was awarded the Slim Harpo Music Ambassador for his representation of the blues music to other music lovers. Lt. Col. Couvillon, who served 39 years and previously served as President of the Baton Rouge Blues Society, is currently on the Board of Directors of the West Baton Rouge Historical Society. He has worked to bring the Slim Harpo US 190 Highway Marker designating the entrance to Mulatto Bend Cemetery, where Slim and both of his parents are buried.
C.C. Adcock, an avid Slim Harpo fan since the age of 15, received the Slim Harpo Music Pioneer for enduring and carrying music forward. Adcock, who works with True Blood music supervisor Gary Calamar, has been instrumental in ensuring Slim Harpo recordings are used. Adcock’s bands, Lil Band of Gold and Lafayette Marquis both regularly perform Slim Harpo songs.
