Voices of Distinction, What You Gonna Do? (Sound of New Orleans)

Though the New Orleans gospel group the Voices of Distinction was established just over three years ago, the individual members have long lifted their voices in praise. Audrey Ferguson and her daughter Dremetericus “Dede” Thurmond, both of whom step out as lead vocalists here, organized the ensemble that includes Ferguson’s cousin Geraldine Hickerson and her daughter Tasha as well as Dina Peters. The vocalist get solid support from their band of organ, keyboards, bass, guitar and drums on a program of traditional gospel tunes. This is old-time gospel singing, performed with conviction and with an emphasis on tight harmonies. With Ferguson out front, the group gets started utilizing a call-and-response style on the exuberant “Lord, Help Me.” She makes use of her skills as a veteran in her timing a phrasing. The tune opens with an almost country feel set by guitarist Ben Buster. Ferguson is back for the slowly determined, story telling, testifying “Good To Me.” Thurmond shares her mother’s talents as heard on “Oh, Peter” and by song’s end she’s screamin’. A professional group who’s performed at the Jazz Fest, Praline Connection and House of Blues, the Voices of Distinction define pure, traditional gospel.
