This Ain’t No Mouse Music! is a 38-track, double disc companion to the documentary of the same name honoring Arhoolie’s Chris Strachwitz, who has released recordings of authentic roots music since 1960.
Though it spans nine genres, the heaviest concentration is in blues, Cajun, Tex-Mex, New Orleans trad jazz and brass bands.
As the Mouse Music title implies, there’s nothing smaltzy or slick about these proceedings.
The blues selections are raw and primal (e.g. Big Joe Williams’ “Sloppy Drunk Blues”) but with surprises, like “Mercury Blues” by its originator KC Douglas that was a hit for rocker Steve Miller and later country star Alan Jackson. Big Mama Thornton’s “Wade in the Water” is overwhelmingly electrifying with Bee Houston’s riveting guitar playing.
Not all tracks are recycled catalogue output, however.
There are 14 previously unreleased live selections including a Michael Doucet-Dennis McGee fiddle duet and another by the brothers Joel and Wilson Savoy. Creole fiddling great Canray Fontenot is captured solo on “Malinda” while Ry Cooder and Tex-Mex accordionist Flaco Jiménez jam superbly on “Let’s Have a Ball.”
An accompanying 32-page booklet provides behind- the-scenes vignettes of how Strachwitz met each performer and the recording session that followed.
A fascinating examination of a recordman who succeeded on his terms.
