There are no real surprises on UNLV’s third and strongest release, Mac, Melph, Calio. UNLV was one of New Orleans’ first ‘bounce’ groups and they have stuck to their style through alI three albums. Bounce, a distinctly local creation, is characterized by singalong choruses and fast-moving dance tracks and has been popularized by DJ Jimi, Everlasting Hitman and several other artists. Those that enjoy bounce music love it with a passion and those who don’t hate it as much. Like it or not, the phenomenon can’t be ignored as sales climb and interest in the sound grows all over the country. On this album, the Uptown crew has improved both their flow and their production. Veteran producer Manny Fresh provides UNLV with tight production and a crisp sound that will have this album booming in clubs and cars throughout the city. Standout joints include “I’m Bout It” “Mac Melph Calio” and “local 580,” featuring fellow Cash Money Records rappers Mr. Ivan, M$. Tee, Black Jack-o and Lil Slim. lyrically, Tec 9, Ya and Yellow relate their Third and Thirteenth Ward experiences with their trademark singsong flow, and guest rappers such as Magnolia Slim and M$. Tee add some real flavor.
The album title refers to the Magnolia, Melpomene, and Calliope projects, and the UNLV crew leave little to the imagination as to what goes on in their hood. Although they have definitely improved as rappers from their earlier releases, their lyrics could go a little deeper than the usual ghetto observations about crooked officers, hustling and striving. Nevertheless, the album will excite fans of bounce music and may even cross over to a larger audience.
