Tres Chicas, Bloom, Red and the Ordinary Girl (Yep Roc)

It may be unusual that an Americana roots release would be recorded in London and produced by Neil Brockbank, known for producing Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music, but the resulting Bloom, Red and the Ordinary Girl is gorgeous. Tres Chicas — Lynn Blakey, Caitlin Cary, and Tonya Lamm — are three women from North Carolina, and each is a gifted musician/singer/songwriter in her own right. Together they make beautiful, melodious music with sweetly sung, romantic lyrics that come achingly from the heart. There’s a longing in their sound that transcends the traditional and becomes the sensual pining of sirens.

The harmonies are enough to recommend this alternative country recording but the songwriting is equally grand. Geraint Watkins, known for his work with Paul McCartney, Bill Wyman and Van Morrison, lends his talent on piano and organ and contributes “My Love,” which is sung with gentle ease by Lamm. Blakey’s “Slip So Easily” recalls the memory of a lover and captures all the wishful thinking of love. This is a CD that women will naturally relate to, and men will find solace in the soothing, sexy voices of the Tres Chicas.
