On this two-record set, recorded live at his granddaughter’s school, Kole
is both teacher and guide on a musical journey through jazz history. When he
plays “Send in the Clowns,” it isn’t just a slow, straight
rendition of the Judy Collins classic. It comes complete with lively, familiar
circus music, switching tempos without missing a beat. Also included are familiar
movie themes like “Titanic,” “Evergreen,” “Over
the Rainbow” and “Chariots of Fire.” Kole pays a 15-minute
tribute to some of his favorite all-time pianists from Eddie Duchin to Errol
Garner to Roger Williams, as well as a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Then, of course,
there is his signature song that he has performed for six presidents and a pope—“Amazing
Grace,” sung twice with the voices of the all-girl St. Scholastica Choir.
Accompanied by a talented ensemble of five great local backup musicians, each
of whom is given ample opportunities to solo, Kole has turned out a superb effort
here. For sheer entertainment value and keyboard wizardry, it doesn’t get
any better than this. Thank you, Chicago—and Al Hirt—for delivering
him to us.
