The Revivalists play Jazz Fest on Saturday, May 3—Samsung Galaxy Stage, 2:05 p.m.
Wind Up Records has reissued the fine disc City of Sound from the Revivalists but has added a bonus disc of live tracks recorded at Tipitina’s, Harvest the Music, and the Brooklyn Bowl.
Since City of Sound was released, the Revivalists have toured relentlessly and it shows on the live tracks. The band sounds big and powerful. The songs have a confidence that has been building in the past two years. David Shaw has become a better frontman. His voice covers more emotion and range and he still has that default desperate tone that gives everything a greater intensity.
The sound of the band has become more psychedelic. The effects on the horns, keyboards and guitars make it all sound a little trippier than before. At certain points, such as on “Concrete (Fish Out of Water),” all the instruments are playing together in such a way that it’s hard to tell which instrument is which.
Between that, and the way the band plays with dynamics and stop breaks, the sounds have a texture that elevate it over most hard rock. In addition, when they get out of that groove and do more slow-burning horn and wah-wah guitar powered rhythm and blues on “Two Ton Wrecking Ball” or mellow ’70s-style country/rock on “Catching Fireflies,” they still sound modern and tight.
Of all the bands coming out of New Orleans now, the Revivalists are one of only a couple candidates with the chops and ambition to get big enough to take their music to the next level. This bonus disc is a great indication of exactly why and how they can make that happen.
