Lena Prima’s last studio album, Prima La Famiglia, was the one she was born to make. It wasn’t the first time she’d done her father Louis Prima’s music, but this time she went into the wider repertoire of classic Italian American pop. Instead of just saluting her dad, she was doing the music that shaped her—a tradition of songs that may be slightly campy, but are always open-hearted and hip.
This is effectively the live version of that album, repeating eight of the 11 songs. But it’s still worth the investment, partly because the 14-piece band (under Lawrence Sieberth’s direction) really swings: Even on oft-recorded tunes like “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” (here in Latin style), they charge out with fresh arrangements. Prima has also gained more confidence since the Famiglia album; her performances here are some of her strongest. The finale here, “Don’t Rain on My Parade” is a new one for her (an old one for Barbra Streisand) and a song perfectly keyed to her personality. The Jungle Book song “I Wanna Be Like You” takes on a bit of poignance, since you can sense it’s her dad that she’s singing about. There’s plenty of humor in the Italian tunes, but she gets straight-up romantic on “Pensate Amore.” On “Come On-a-My House” she sounds flirtatious even while dropping lines about lasagna and calamari. Anyone with Italian blood will surely understand.
It’s also appropriate that the album was made in Las Vegas, where this kind of music originally flourished. You’re just as likely to find rock bands nowadays, so Prima and company bring back the Vegas of legend: Eternally cool, with some pasta fagioli.
