The Band That Fell To Earth, Greetings from the Land of Carbon (Independent)

And I was expecting glam rock from a band that gets its name from a David Bowie movie! The Band That Fell To Earth specializes the kind of late-’80s rock that I could imagine having heard on college radio back in the days when alternative music really was an alternative. The songs never lose their melodic sense, and lead singer Dave Baker’s plaintive vocals fit the material remarkably well. (This is best reflected on the sing-along chorus of “Devil May Care,” the CD’s best song). My only fret is that the five songs on this demo tend to run together, sometimes leading the listener to ask what the difference was between this song and the last one. The CD is also a little short, as I could imagine a longer EP, if not a full-length, fleshing out the songs that are here. But if classic, pop-inflected indie rock is your cup of tea, then The Band That Fell To Earth has landed for you.
