The brothers Lee and company score again with another set of loud, raunchy anthems that celebrate rock ‘n’ roll and the lifestyle around which it revolves. And although the sound hasn’t changed much since their last hit album, Supagroup may be starting to grow out of the endless AC/DC comparisons into a slightly more varied style á la early-’80s Aerosmith. This is especially evident on the blues-inflected “Hot Times,” which comments on the weather in New Orleans and the best solution: an ice cold beer. And the slow love song “I’m Gonna Change,” which still retains bite and swagger despite the change in pace, proves that the boys just can’t stoop to over-emotional balladry. But the band is still at what they do best, which is balls-out rock. The best example is the Buckcherry-esque “Bastard,” which I predict will be their next “Rock and Roll Tried to Ruin My Life.” Whatever Supagroup may lack in complete originality, they more than make up for with their spirited, raucous, and fun evocation of the wild spirits of rock ‘n’ roll’s past.
