This is the fourth release by this Lebeau, Louisiana native who currently resides in the Houston area. Rideau is a favorite on the Houston zydeco circuit. In 1998, he was awarded two Clifton Chenier Zydeco Awards for Best Zydeco Album and Best Zydeco Band. He cites fellow Lebeau native Rockin’ Sidney as one of his greatest influences and this is certainly apparent upon listening to I’m So Glad. Rideau combines traditional zydeco with more popular music forms in much the same way that Sidney was able to. Hip-hop influences are apparent throughout.
The song “You’re Nagging Me” is more reminiscent of popular hip-hop star Will Smith than it is of Boozoo Chavis. Many of the songs on the album feature raps by Rideau and a number of guest artists. Not surprisingly then, the record is a collection of danceable grooves from start to finish. “If U Don’t Use It, You’re Gonna Lose it” has a rhythm and blues flare. “Bayou Swamp Thang” is one of the most interesting songs on this disc. It can best be described as a waltz with a catchy rap thrown in for spice.
The title tune “I’m So Glad” is somewhat reminiscent of the late Beau Jocque while other tunes like Rideau’s cover of the Michael Doucet and Wayne Toups tune “Johnny Can’t Dance” is definitely infused with Step Rideau’s bold style. This style is an enticing mix of more traditional rural zydeco styles
and the urban zydeco sounds of Houston.
Rideau has considerable skill as a vocalist and a certain flair for the accordion. More importantly, he is a great songwriter—each of his songs tells a poignant story that many listeners will be able to relate to. All in all, this a great record for a Saturday night dance party—Rideau will definitely keep you steppin’ with each of the four songs on the CD.
