Shaggadelic is the stage name for rapper, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Ryan Batiste, whose latest album Twilight was recorded during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. In an era when distancing ourselves from each other and our plans are virtually mandated by law, the 14-track project is an impressive showcase of togetherness, which features artist Kalipop a.k.a. Popgod, as well as Perk and Kendal Banks all from PJ Morton label (Morton Records) and others.
Twilight is an infusion of rap, soul and R&B, a mélange that some have termed “trap soul,” thanks in part to the debut album of that name by Bryson Tiller. Shaggadelic’s interpretation is sexy and braggadocious and replete with references to conquests both physical and material. Whether the haters he’s attracted, the women he’s seduced, or the money he’s flaunting are actual achievements or just cursory brags doesn’t matter. His lyrics, though perhaps not layered with extensive rhyme schemes, unveil a persona who is steadfast in his ambition. Such an attitude is by no means unique in rap. But considering that Shaggadelic penned his verses during a citywide shutdown when falling into malaise is easy, his cocky, self-determined delivery is kind of endearing.
It’s a fun and entertaining listen which is elevated into something more with the sultry contributions from Popgod on “One Night” and the raunchy, lighthearted tête-à-tête from Jae Lox and Brandon Tarell on “Excited.” On “Smokers Section,” things cool down a bit in a way that’s reminiscent of the anthemic 420-friendly mixtape from Wiz Khalifa, “Kush & OJ.” All in all, Shaggadelic—a member of the Batiste Father and Sons for the New Millennium family band—offers listeners a well-produced glimpse into the contemporary rap-soul hybrid scene.
