The first couple tracks on this six-song EP are exactly what you’d hope a band called Sexual Thunder! would sound like.
“Cheek Sweat” and “Jewelius Pleaser” are both hedonism run wild. Both are done in retro-disco style, with instant sing-a-long choruses—though you’d probably want to think twice before singing “Come kiss my cheek sweat” or “Jewlius Pleaser, you got to tease her” while walking down the street.
But the band turns to more serious funk on “Family Tree,” a romantic tune that would’ve worked fine on a vintage Ohio Players album, and “Power to the People” which works political soundbites onto a groove that shifts from funk to jazz.
Splitting the difference is “To Be or Not to Be a Bitch,” which puts forth a message of sexual equality in just-about-broadcastable terms.
So Sexual Thunder! hits the mark whether they’re playing it serious or with tongue (literally) in cheek.
