Like a lot of groups, Sassafras Jubilee (SJ) has had its fair share of evolving and morphing to eventually arrive at a comfortable sound and a vibe that suggests that its members enjoy playing together.
On “Pleased to Please You” and “Will You Still Love Me?” Lafayette’s mostly string quartet is vibrant, perky and fun with zippy melodies and ooh-ahhhing background vocals. While infectious euphoria could easily be its signature, it’s not a card that gets overplayed.
Through the course of these 10 tracks, seven of which were written by multi-instrumentalist Walter Pierce, SJ shifts its arrangements enough not to get stale, as evidenced by the neo-Pogues-ish “One Because You Love Me” and the old school folk Prozac of “New Year’s Day.”
While Andrea Cohen is a big part of the appeal with her expressive, unobtrusive fiddle solos and lickety-split fill-ins, as a vocalist, she’s SJ’s secret weapon with an affecting, haunting delivery. The slow, waltzing “Tumble and Turned” is perhaps her best performance on an arty track that includes distant-sounding, intermittent beats, a bowed-string bass solo and an entrancing aura from a cymbal and snare played with yarn mallets.
“New Thing” trails close behind with its jazzy stylings, chiming notes and the catchy line “Like I never knew new before.” As evidenced here, there’s enough sustainable creativity to continue moving forward.
