Guitarist Rick Holmstrom is a West Coast mainstay, mainly because of his ongoing relationship with Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers and a stint with the late, great William Clarke. As a solo artist, though, there’s really only one thing going on, and that’s Rick’s axe itself, overobsessed with itself, overdistorted in the best way and less concerned with melody than listening to its own voice. Rick’s got a clear, high voice that suits him well, but it can’t compete with anything that comes off his OTHER neck. This may be the first guitarist’s solo album I’ve heard in a long time that doesn’t have enough guitar on it. This wasn’t a problem on his last, all-instrumental CD, 1996’s “Lookout!,” but now, you have to wade halfway through fairly limp performances like “Have You Seen My Girl” to get to the real meat of the tune. Thankfully, there’s still a few crystalline moments when Holmstrom lets his guitar do all the talking, such as the half-samba-half-cocktail-hour gloss of “Phlazzbo,” the rubbery lurch of “Wiggle Stick,” the gentle bump and grind of “Uno Mas,” and the closing guess-what of “Lost In The Shuffle.” Rick fans are well advised to grab this one for some great fretwork; more casual fans will want to wait till he gets wild with the Flyers again.
