Since breaking onto the Louisiana music scene in 2017, Baton Rouge rockers Quarx have made a name for themselves as a live rock ’n’ roll act that blends a variety of influences and features tight improvisation and rotating set lists.
In 2018 Quarx got busy on the local club circuit, headlined the Varsity Theatre and in 2019 recorded their self-titled eponymous EP. The album showcases a variety of influences, including progressive and psychedelic rock, metal, blues, and funk. Led by vocalist/rhythm guitarist Alaric Fricke, the band began building a fan base across the state and throughout the Southeast. Because of their classic rock influences, Quarx quickly gained traction with audiences both young and old. Performing their first batch of original tunes, as well as covers by bands like Zeppelin and Parliament, Quarx lit up venues including Gasa Gasa, Howlin’ Wolf and others. They were a featured act at the Fête du Void Festival in Oakdale, Louisiana, and were scheduled to play at the House of Blues during French Quarter Fest this year.
With live music temporarily at a standstill, the band is now hard at work in the studio, writing and recording new music, and preparing for an extensive tour schedule once the quarantine ends.
The band recently released a single “Rabbit Run” which is the fifth track on the EP. “Rabbit Run” is a frenetic rocker featuring distorted guitars and a driving rhythm section. It’s riff-heavy, head-bobbing rock ’n’ roll, reminiscent of early Aerosmith or even the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Besides completing the songs that will comprise their next album, Quarx’s immediate plans include releasing a video cover of a song by their friends in the Iceman Special. When New Orleans nightclubs re-open their doors, be sure not to miss this up-and-coming, high-octane band and their unique, eclectic take on classic rock ’n’ roll.
