Through a series of remote recording sessions, keyboardist, vocalist and composer PJ Morton, the son of Bishop Paul S. Morton (senior pastor of Changing a Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church in Atlanta, and co-pastor of Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church in New Orleans), has released his first gospel album.
PJ is most widely recognized as a member of the Grammy-winning rhythm and blues/pop band Maroon 5 and for his work and Grammy-nominated recordings released under his own name. He did however begin his musical journey in the church before leaving his hometown of New Orleans to pursue his career in secular styles. PJ’s roots in the church remained in his sound, as heard on his 2017 album Gumbo and through the material he composed for artists in the gospel world.
Gospel According to PJ Morton is an apt title for this fine album filled with material from the multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist’s pen. The songs reflect Morton’s stylistically modern outlook and often contain lyrics that could be interpreted from a either a religious or secular viewpoint. A good example is “So In Love,” a lively number that pleases with its reggae-like rhythm. It features Darrel “MusiqCity” Walls and Zacardi Cortez.
Throughout, great voices remotely join Morton in his New Orleans studio. Le’Andria Johnson and Mary Mary passionately deliver “All in His Plan,” a love letter to the Lord that remains more specifically in the gospel realm. After a captured conversation with his father that opens the disc, Kim Burrell and Morton team on the uplifting “Don’t Let Go.” Superstar Yolanda Adams closes the album performing the up-tempo, stunningly arranged “Do You Believe.”
Gospel According to PJ offers spirituality, heart and soul through the gift of music.
