Before there was Rosie Ledet and the Zydeco Playboys, there was Morris Ledet and the Zydeco Playboys. It was only by accident that Morris discovered that his beautiful bride had secretly learned to play accordion and write songs. “Swing That Thing” is one of Rosie’s bigger hits, so initially it seems that Morris and adult daughter Kassy are attempting to leverage off of mama/ex-wife Rosie’s fame. But the album is intended to be a daughter’s motherly tribute. Kassy’s vocals may evoke comparisons to her internationally famous mother, but her singing style isn’t as steamy or sultry. Of the four tracks she’s featured on, “That’s What Makes It Hot” is the best due to the mysterious and beckoning aura she creates.
The bulk of the album is reminiscent of Morris’ pre-Rosie band from 20-some years ago—hard-punching rural zydeco devoid of today’s contemporary urban influences. “Morris’ Boozoo Breakdown” is the most spirited, while the group practically assaults “(Goin’ to) Dog Hill,” a remarkable rendition considering how omnipresent this classic is. Also included is “Te Connaitre (You Know),” an early original that mixes professions of love and billy goats. In between, there’s an old-style waltz and an accordion-percussion vamp, both serving as proof that Morris still stays close to the root.
