Nearing four decades into his career, pianist Mitch Woods once again showcases his talent through his latest album, Friends Along the Way.
The album was originally released in 2017 through eOne; however, the label had decided to become a film company, ending the promotion of all of their musical releases. After receiving the news, Woods decided to secure ownership of his work. This led to his re-release of the album as a multi-disc set with five unreleased tracks.
As the title states, the album features friends that Woods has met throughout his career. However, these aren’t ordinary friends. These are blues legends, and they make sure to let us know why they hold that title.
While the original album was reviewed by OffBeat Magazine in 2017, the re-release of the album contains unreleased tracks. “Blues for New Orleans” is vocally led by New Orleans native Cyril Neville while being accompanied by piano played by Woods. He grittily sings about his love for New Orleans and his desire to live in the city once again for he is having “heartbreaking dreams.” In contrast, Maria Muldaur happily sings “If you wanna have fun, you ought to go to New Orleans” in the track “Mojo Mambo.” Kenny Neal and John Hammond similarly express their interest in bothersome women in “Don’t Dip in my Bizness” and “Southbound Blues” respectively. The album officially closes with “Worried Life Blues” from a vocal duet by Joe Louis Walker and Woods.
Although this is a blues album, the feeling of happiness and respect is present within Woods and his friends. There is nothing better than creating something with the people you hold dear to your heart.
