Little Johnny Christian has a strong band and is known for really shaking down in Chicago; he’s always a show stopper. His previous LP on Big Boy, Somebody Call My Baby, was extremely down-in-the-alley tough. And this new collaboration gets down to the heart of the matter. He does a great rendition of “Since I Met You Baby” (by Ivory Joe Hunter) and has that hard-driving Chicago blues feel on “Ain’t Going to Worry About Tomorrow.”
He’s got a Magic Sam honesty about his blues, and an Otis Rush feel – definitely Chicago blues. All of the Big Boy records that I’ve heard always have this raw intensity about them. Big Boy, a small Chicago-based label, has recorded such artists as Willie Kent, Donald Jenkins and the Delighters, plus Big Daddy Kinsey. My favorite tune on the Little Johnny collection is “Somebody Done Changed the Lock on My Door.” The record may be hard to find; call Big Boy at 312-684-0021.
