Although he’s not a household name, Les Getrex has been on the New Orleans music scene for some time. Getrex, a singer/songwriter/guitarist, had a really good blues single, “Don’t Say A Mumblin’ Word,” in 1976. The album opens with the title track, a mid-tempo tune with a somewhat country arrangement that is both commercial and alluring. We hear a different Getrex on “One Believer,” as his outgoing personality comes to the fore and the band plays with funky abandon. A couple of tracks, “Violence of Sunrise” and “Jumpin’ Over Dollars,” have a nice Tyrone Davis sound (circa 1973) and Getrex’s voice has a gospel feel. “Hey Babe” and the remake of “Don’t Say A Mumblin’ Word” are as close as Getrex gets to pure blues and he does a very good job. Interestingly, Getrex doesn’t solo much as he is content to play fills and rhythms. However, his bandmates (including Micheal Ward, Brian Cayolle and Traci Griffin among others) are given ample opportunity to solo, contributing to the loose but professional sound found here.
Overall 300 Miles proves Getrex is a very entertaining artist and this CD should help him attract a few new fans. Maybe it will even get him into some clubs where more New Orleanians can enjoy his talent.
