Lafayette Rhythm Devils, Runnin’ (Z’Affaire Records)

Since the Lafayette Rhythm Devils’ laudable debut of 2003, things have changed in the lair. The departure of bassist George Toups and fiddler Mitch Reed could have meant the Devils’ demise but in saunters groovin’ babe bassist Yvette Landry and Feufollet’s fireballin’ fiddler Chris Segura to keep the party roaring louder than ever. The Hub City hellions have definitely staked their corner in the scootin’ dancehall world by packing plenty of pop, hop, bounce and trounce in every ounce. Overall it’s a much more balanced affair with a mixture of tempos, three originals and a treasure trove of chestnuts from such Cajun music popes as Adam Hebert, Iry LeJeune and Lawrence Walker. Guitarist Randy Vidrine sings a little lower than usual here while the ‘excuse me while I’ll touch the sky’ singing mantle has been passed to trilled-filled, pulsing accordionist Peppy Carmello. The Cajun from Church Point really nails it on Walker’s “Valse de Minuit” and Cyprien Landreau’s “Talle du Ronces.” Yet, Vidrine shows he still has plenty of gutsy growl left, unleashing plenty of power on Hebert’s “La Pointe aux Pins.” When it comes to these guys, it’s okay to be a devil worshipper.
