Sometimes being too laid back is a good thing. In the case of Kenneth Thibodeaux and the Cajun Dance Band (CDB), more than a decade slipped by before the Eunice group recorded their first full-length project. But when the time arrived, they were primed and the result is a trophy effort that holds up well. Throughout the dozen tracks heard here, the CDB maintains a relaxed signature groove where one musical part flows breathlessly into the next. Thibodeaux’s accordion playing sparkles with a bright, buoyant sound while behind the traps, brother Ray sings beautifully in an unruffled style. Area fiddle king Jason Frey is also a contributor to the overall airy sound with dependable awe-inspiring solos and cool twin fiddle parts dubbed on several songs. Unlike other weekend warrior bands that rely strictly on cover material, Thibodeaux and bassist Jimmy Higginbotham write a fair bit of the material. What’s interesting about Higg’s contributions is a couple were collaborations with his late father Darryl who wrote the legendary “Saturday Night Special,” the international hit for Lesa Cormier and the Sundown Playboys. The rest of the choice selections comes from Ronnie Frugé, the Touchet Brothers, Bobby Lege and the Lake Charles Playboys. Although Jackie Caillier and the Cajun Cousins resurrected Aldus Roger’s “Diga Ding Ding Dong” on their last album, the CDB’s version is the one enjoying a second wind of popularity. Hopefully it won’t be another decade before these guys squeeze into the studio again.
