This ’98 Labor Day weekend gig, Frank’s first live recording, is zydeco heaven. Frank’s Soileau Zydeco Band is known for four hour shows without a pause. But on holiday weekends such as this, the sets last an incredible, break-less six hours.
With that much music, the songs culled from that marathon evening make for a smart set in itself. There’s a wide assortment of fresh material that could easily pass as a studio recording.
Ten of Frank’s eleven songs come from his inexhaustible repertoire of unrecorded tunes, two from pops Preston Frank while five others are well chosen covers including “Donne-mon Ca” (based on the “Eunice Two-Step”) and the sultry closer “I Want Her” from R&B artist Keith Sweat.
All in all, it’s a dancer’s delight of a disc. Frank gets it all cranked up and the band’s chugs on like a well-oiled piece of machinery. In between, Frank ponders about some chickie’s choice of toothpaste (“Hey Pretty Baby”). warbles like Leo ‘The Bull’ Thomas (“Why You Wanna Make Me Cry”) and delves into his signature mind-numbing grooves on “Sometimes We Make You Move Your Feet” and the 8:15 “Moving To The Groove.”
For that matter, the whole thing’s a groove, 72 minutes worth -just don’t forget the liquids if you try this at home.
