In the rehearsal hall and perhaps in clubs, local band Keeping Crescent likely sounds bigger, louder and more dramatic. On Your Escape EP, the last band to wave the flag for late ’90s alt/emo-metal lacks the epic scale to make the music as dramatic and affecting as it wants to be. There’s a lot of angst here, but without a musically bludgeoning presence, “Do you believe in saviors? / ’Cause I know I did / but now I feel so forsaken” becomes cheap melodrama. When Keeping Crescent isn’t hard, though, it slips even further back in time to the first generation of college/alternative rock. In those moments, the lack of weight is less of an issue, but the weirdness of a band being 10 to 15 years behind its moment remains.
