The internet is buzzing right now over “Kaytraminé”, the new alternative rap duo created by eclectic Portland, OR emcee Aminé and funk house/electronic hip hop producer Kaytranada. The newly formed house/rap group released their first single “4EVA” on April 7, featuring legendary artist and producer Pharrell Williams. The music video for the track, directed by Jack Egert, features Kay and Aminé dancing and singing along to the song in an all blue room alongside 3D-animated versions of themselves. It also includes a beat switch near the end which isn’t included on the original track, hinting that it may be a snippet from an upcoming album.
Aminé is most well known for upbeat, bubbly tracks such as “Red Mercedes” and his breakout 2016 hit “Caroline”, while Kaytranada is known for deep funk house tracks such as his viral remix of Teedra Moses’ 2004 single “Be Your Girl” and “10%”, the hit single featuring Kali Uchis from his 2019 album Bubba. Both artists are well known for their experimental takes on modern hip hop, often favoring more electronic production, as is apparent throughout Aminé’s latest solo project from 2021, TWOPOINTFIVE. However, this new collaborative project, titled simply by shoving the two artist’s names together, draws on each of their personal musical stylings to create an exciting and refreshingly different sound which the hip hop scene has been lacking as of late. “4EVA” combines the bouncy, house-influenced production of Kaytranada with the quirky, playful, wordplay-heavy flows of Aminé, sprinkling just a hint of Pharrell’s iconic style into both the track’s vocals and production. The song has already amassed over 8 million streams on Spotify. Most recently, fans of Kaytraminé who found themselves at Coachella this year were delighted to see the duo perform the new track together.
An album from the two stars seems to be imminent, although no project has been officially announced as of yet.
