Kan-Tu Blues Band, Live at the Village Trestle (Independent)

If you’re salivating over the prospect of a long overdue Rockin’ Jake record, you might have to wait a bit longer. But in the meantime, this live recording from the Village Trestle in Manchester, New Hampshire featuring the former New Orleans harmonica player, guitarist/ringleader Jerry “The Reverend” Paquette and several Roomful of Blues musicians, will more than suffice. With no rehearsals and no set list, the eight-man collective found their groove quickly and cruised comfortably through various shuffles, boogies, slow bluesy benders and Jake’s own road ode “Back to the Big Easy.” There are only eight songs in this 71-minute set, meaning that there’s plenty of generous jamming between Jake, Travis Colby (keyboards), “Bubba” Enos (trumpet), Mark Earley (saxophone) and Carl Querfurth (trombone). When it’s Paquette’s turn to step up to the plate, he does so mightily, demonstrating that he can scorch a few strings in the process. The cover artwork and overall packaging is unimpressive, but the good news is that this one-of-a-kind recording is still worth checking out.
